“I met Wayne McIntyre many years ago when he was still president of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. Even then I was impressed with how he remembered my name, who I was and really listened to what I had to say even though I was a young, solo entrepreneur starting out. So when Wayne says action is needed on affordable housing, I know he will push for that. When he says we need a stronger local economy, I know he will be working towards that. When he says we need young people I know he means it. When he says we need input from local people I know he will ask us. And when he says we need more and better communication of project progress and post-implementation reviews (like on water projects) I know he will be doing his utmost to ensure that happens.
Wayne is a true statesman; he listens, he knows when it is time to pause and reflect – and when action is needed. He has experience, wisdom and integrity – he does what he says he is going to do.”
With these elections on Salt Spring, I’m looking for a new era. I believe Wayne can deliver.”

Platform
I would like to take the next step and use my experience and skills, in conjunction with community input, to help move Salt Spring into a new era of cooperation and openness. I will work hard on YOUR behalf to implement my platform, outlined below.
A Strong Community
- A strong community considers all aspects of sustainability: economic, social and the environment. Ideally they help each other… a strong economy can help support social programs such as affordable housing and environmental initiatives.
Financial Responsibility and Accountability
- Economic times are uncertain, fiscal prudence and controls and accountability are essential. I will treat your tax dollars as investments in our community; not expenditures.
- Ensure a transparent and professional approach on large projects; early and continuous community consultation as well as risk assessment and contingencies.
Governance
- The recent survey shows strong support for a new governance model. The community needs an independent Provincial Government Salt Spring governance review including the incorporation option. Only then will the benefits, disadvantages and costs be available so informed judgments can be made. While I will work hard on the community’s behalf under the existing model, I will be relentless in ensuring this study occurs before my term expires.
Affordable Housing
- Support affordable housing; be open to innovation. The need is critical; action rather than more studies. I believe there are innovative ways to make this happen on Salt Spring and intend to engage all elements of the community to make this happen.
Water Management
- Audit recent upgrades to determine what went wrong, including the significant budget overruns. No repeats or surprises!
- Work with the Water Council and the Water Districts to do a thorough evaluation and a long-term plan for water quality, supply and distribution.
- As in financial responsibility, insist on a transparent and professional process on large projects. I will also encourage water catchment systems.
Economic Development
- A healthy economy is a key factor in retaining services, jobs and keeping and attracting young families. We need young people, they are our future.
- Push to complete the CRD Salt Spring Community Economic Development Strategy as well as projects to support existing and new businesses.
Delivery of Community Services
- Community consultation on establishing service needs and priorities, including water & waste management, recreation and transportation.
Green Construction Standards
- Support green standards through formal and informal channels; include education and incentives. Look at fast tracking green projects.
More Trust /CRD cooperation
- Both affect the community significantly and there can be overlap and/or impediments by not working together. An example is economic development.
- At the invitation of the Trust I would give relevant updates at their public meetings and engage in other trust initiatives as requested.
Positive action
- Support focussing the community’s talent and energy on positive action; not confrontation…cooperation, not conflict. Successful governance brings diverse constituencies together.
- On a regular basis, I will commit to updating the community on CRD issues.
